Introducing Roots and Branches

By the time I finished writing The Slow Trail Home, the extended Black family had grown so extensively that I realized I could never write a full book about each of the younger generation. But as I’d grown attached to each of them, I decided instead to write a series of shorter stories focused around each of the Black children (except Katja, since she already had a huge book of her own). I also decided to make these tales available to my readers as I write them. Once all are written, I’ll collect them into a published book of companion stories called Roots & Branches, and remove...

The Slow Trail Home is now available!

I am thrilled to announce that The Slow Trail Home is (finally) available in Kindle and paperback formats! This particular set of stories now has a name: The War and the West.  An Uncivilized Yankee begins the sequence, followed by Bittersweet Days and A Great Wide Nowhere. After Nowhere comes Farewell and Goodbye. The Slow Trail Home picks up ten years after the events in Farewell. From the back cover: “You come back, ’kay? Promise?” “I promise.” Katja Black was just five when she waved farewell to the Steeles as they left Fort Ellis. That was a decade ago. Kat has since matured into a...

“You come back, ’kay? Promise?” “I promise.” Katja Black was just five when she waved farewell to the Steeles as they left Fort Ellis. That was a decade ago. Kat has since matured into a lovely flame-haired Fire-Caller like her mother, while remaining as logical and self-controlled as her father. But despite her practical, rational view of life and her cool exterior, Kat still holds on to the secret hope that someday Jonathan Steele will return for her. Then, while visiting family in Texas, Kat’s orderly life becomes a nightmare when a madman bent on revenge abducts her from the train...

Farewell and Goodbye: A Novella

One of the most exciting–and terrifying–things an author gets to do is announce the arrival of a new work. So, I am pleased to announce (drum-roll, please!) that Farewell and Goodbye is now available for Kindle purchase! This is the “bridge” story that connects A Great Wide Nowhere with The Slow Trail Home (due out Winter 2015-16). A print edition is in the works as well. I will likely be selling that directly, instead of making it available through Amazon (mainly because it is more cost effective for everyone involved to do it that way). *** From the description:...

A Slow Road Trip Home…

Posted by on Jun 20, 2013 in Announcements | 0 comments

Greetings! I know–it’s been forever since I’ve posted anything here (in all honesty, I’ve never really gotten in the habit of posting to this particular blog). However, that is about to change. A week from today, I will be headed out for a 5,000+ mile road trip to the West. This is mainly a research trip for the next book in the continuing story of the Anderson and Black families, but there will be some friends seen and fun places visited too. Just like last time (the big Wyoming/Colorado research trip for A Great Wide Nowhere), it’ll be us three girls. My...

A Great Wide Nowhere, the sequel to An Uncivilized Yankee, will soon be available from Amazon.com and as a Kindle e-book! A man of reason… Captain Robert Black can find a logical, rational explanation for everything. Everything, that is, except his uncanny ability as a Finder … and the feelings he has for the tiny red-haired spark of a girl named Danica Anderson. But though he loves her, he swears he will never ask her to share his life out West. Life on the frontier is hell for a woman, and Danica has already been through hell once . A girl with dreams… From the night they first...
