What did authors do in the days before the Internet? Online research can be both a boon and a curse (oh, the rabbit trails I’ve chased while researching!)
Over the course of researching one of my novels, I will often read over 20 different books looking for information. It used to be that I would buy all the books I used, because I like to mark directly in the book when taking notes. After my bookshelves and pocketbook started to complain, I set up these mental guidelines for buying/keeping books.
- Can I find this material easily online? ==> Don’t buy.
- Is this a resource I’ll likely use over and over again? ==> Buy and keep.
- Is the book so specific that my local library likely won’t carry it? ==> Buy and keep.
